Escape
Escape is an atmospheric coastal oil painting exploring stillness, memory and the quiet geometry of coastal space.
Inspired by Newcastle Baths, the composition references coastal architecture through the presence of weathered safety chains positioned along the water’s edge. These elements introduce textural contrast while referencing the passage of time, where functional forms soften through exposure to salt, wind and tide.
The painting explores five visual expressions of water across the composition — shallow pools, rippling surface water, white foam movement, reflective light patterns and deeper atmospheric tones. These layered water forms create spatial rhythm while suggesting natural cycles of movement and stillness.
Seagulls move across the horizon line, introducing visual lightness and directional flow through the upper composition. Shell forms appear subtly within the landscape, reinforcing coastal architecture and natural continuity.
Layered oil paint techniques allow colour and light to build slowly across the surface, creating depth and atmospheric luminosity.
Escape is designed as a contemplative coastal work for interiors seeking calm visual presence, spatial clarity and quiet emotional resonance.
