Surrealist Artist Carmen Delprat with Art Scarves and Fine Art prints

Artist Biography

Carmen Delprat is a Newcastle, New South Wales–based contemporary Australian artist whose practice has evolved over more than three decades. Working primarily in oil, she creates two interconnected bodies of work: expressive coastal paintings inspired by the Australian shoreline, and contemporary figurative paintings in which the female form is interwoven with shells and marine symbolism. Together, these works explore themes of beauty, memory, identity and our enduring emotional connection with the natural world.

Her paintings are informed by years of close observation of the coast—from expansive seascapes and shifting tides to weathered shells, seabirds, sandstone formations and the hidden landscapes beneath the ocean's surface. Whether painting the coastline or the human figure, Delprat seeks to express more than physical appearance, creating works that evoke stillness, contemplation and the quiet beauty that often goes unnoticed.

Delprat holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts, a Diploma of Fine Art, a Master of Fine Art and a Diploma of Art Education. Her academic background has provided a strong foundation for a lifelong commitment to artistic practice, research and visual storytelling.

Beginning her career as a printmaker, Delprat has developed a substantial painting practice while also working professionally as an illustrator, designer and educator. These experiences have strengthened her technical expertise and broadened her visual language, while her commitment to painting has remained at the heart of her creative practice.

Earlier in her career she produced more than one thousand illustrations for the internationally distributed cult video board game Atmosfear, created by the production company A Couple of Cowboys. More recently, her work was featured in collaboration with MINI Newcastle Garage, where one of her paintings was transformed into a full vehicle wrap for a MINI Cooper S, celebrating the intersection of fine art, design and innovation. She also served as a Brand Ambassador for MINI Newcastle Garage.

Delprat's work is held in private collections throughout Australia and internationally. Through the Carmen Delprat Art Collection she also produces selected fine art prints and limited-edition art products that extend the reach of her original paintings while remaining true to her artistic vision.

Her practice is guided by a belief that art has the power to deepen our awareness of the world around us. Whether depicting the vastness of the sea or the quiet symbolism of shells within the female form, her paintings invite viewers to pause, reflect and discover the beauty that waits quietly.

Artist Statement

I paint the beauty that waits quietly.

My work is inspired by the Australian coastline—not only its sweeping seascapes, but also the often-overlooked details that give it character and life. Weathered shells, drifting seaweed, seabirds, tidal pools, sandstone formations and the ever-changing movement of the ocean all offer moments of discovery that continue to inspire my paintings.

Each painting begins with careful observation, but it is never simply a record of place. Years of returning to the coastline have deepened my connection to it, allowing memory, intuition and lived experience to become woven into each work. I seek to express not only what I see, but also the sense of belonging, wonder and emotional connection that these places evoke.

Rather than imposing a particular mood, I respond to what the landscape reveals. Some paintings emerge from moments of quiet reflection, while others celebrate the energy, movement and changing light of the sea. Whether through vivid colour, dramatic composition or subtle detail, my aim is to capture the atmosphere and spirit of the coast, inviting viewers to experience its beauty in all its forms.

Through painting, I hope to create space for reflection and reconnection with the natural world. My work is an invitation to slow down, look more closely, and discover the beauty, memories and emotions that the Australian coastline can awaken within us.
