Lightning Whelk Charm ~ Original Surreal Shell Portrait

Lightning Whelk Charm ~ Original Surreal Shell Portrait
Original coloured pencil illustration by Carmen Delprat, 2022. Framed.

Lightning Whelk Charm is an original shell portrait, a fine portrait study exploring natural architecture, light and psychological presence.

The figure is presented with a downward gaze, establishing quiet composure within the composition. A Lightning Whelk shell emerges from the portrait structure, positioned as a sculptural crown form. The shell's spiral structure introduces rhythmic movement, with flame-like tendrils extending through the upper composition in soft, controlled flow.

Warm amber, gold and rose tonal accents within the shell contrast against a cooler neutral background palette of soft grey tones. This chromatic contrast creates visual depth while maintaining atmospheric restraint and clarity.

Rendered in Albrecht Dürer coloured pencils on 300gsm university-grade mixed media paper, the work demonstrates refined tonal control, delicate surface layering and precise line development.

About the Lightning Whelk
The Lightning Whelk is unusual among shells: it coils to the left, while most shells spiral to the right. I see it as a symbol of individuality, of going against the grain and of the spark that changes direction.

Lightning Whelk Charm is conceived as an atmospheric portrait study of strength, balance and natural structure, designed for interiors seeking refined visual presence and quiet luminosity.
