The Symbolism of Shells in My Artwork
Shells have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Their beauty first captures the eye, yet beneath their intricate forms lies a deeper symbolism that continues to inspire my artwork.
To me, shells represent the treasures of the sea—unique creations shaped by time, nature, and the unseen forces of life. No two shells are exactly alike. Each carries its own history, markings, and journey, much like every human being.
In my artwork, shells often appear as companions to figures or landscapes, acting as symbols of inner knowing, imagination, and connection to the natural world. They invite the viewer to look beyond the surface and explore deeper layers of meaning.
One of the aspects that fascinates me most is the shell’s relationship with time. Through its spiral growth and ratio progression, the shell records its own story. As Professor David Bowen has observed, the shell embodies a progression through time: the past represented by what has already formed, the present in its current state, and the future in the continuing pattern of growth. The shell becomes a living record of becoming.
This idea resonates deeply with my own creative practice. We are all evolving, shaped by our experiences, memories, challenges, and aspirations. Like the shell, we carry traces of where we have been while continually growing towards what we may become.
Shells also symbolise intuition and inner listening. Many of us remember holding a shell to our ear and hearing what seems like the sound of the ocean. Whether real or imagined, this experience invites us to pause and listen. It reminds us that wisdom often emerges not from noise and distraction, but from stillness and reflection.

There is also a remarkable strength within a shell. Formed through natural processes, it protects the life within while remaining elegant and beautiful. This balance between strength and delicacy is something I often seek to express through my paintings. The shell reminds us that resilience does not have to be harsh; it can coexist with grace, beauty, and sensitivity.
The ocean itself is often associated with emotion, mystery, dreams, and the subconscious mind. As treasures carried from the sea, shells become symbols of these hidden worlds. They are fragments of a larger story, washed ashore as reminders of the interconnectedness of life.
In my surrealist artworks, shells become more than objects. They become vessels of memory, intuition, transformation, beauty, and time itself. They invite viewers to reflect on their own journeys, to listen more closely to their inner voice, and to appreciate the extraordinary beauty that can be found within the natural world.
