You turn it over in your hand, feeling the smooth ridges and delicate spirals. Maybe you hold it up to your ear to hear the faint rush of the sea. Without even thinking, you slip it into your pocket.
Why?
Perhaps it’s because shells carry more than just their own beauty. They hold a little of the ocean’s story — and a piece of yours too. They remind you of that moment: the warmth of the sun, the steady rhythm of waves, the calm you felt simply standing there.
It’s no wonder that for centuries, shells have been powerful symbols in art — representing transformation, rebirth and spiritual protection. In this post, I’ll share how these forms, colours and energies can do more than fill a frame — they can shift the atmosphere of a room and even your state of mind.
There is something profoundly moving about the quiet resilience of a shell.

One of the most powerful ideas I work with in my art is the ratio progression of the shell’s spiral. It's a visual metaphor for the timeline of the human experience:
The inner coil: where we began — the protected, unseen past that shaped us.
The current curve: the present moment, always in motion, ever expanding.
The unfurling edge: the invitation into tomorrow, an unknown still forming.
This progression reminds us that transformation is not linear — it’s cyclical. We don’t discard the past; we carry it with us, layer by layer, as we grow more spacious within.
Shells as Soul Armour
When I crown a portrait with a shell or place it delicately in a composition, it’s never decorative. It’s a visual declaration:“This soul has weathered tides. This spirit has outgrown itself, beautifully.”
Shells are reminders that vulnerability and strength can coexist. That protection doesn’t mean hiding. That beauty can be born from erosion, pressure and time.
