About the Artist
Welcome and thank you for taking the time to view my work.
I am a Newcastle female artist who is stimulated to paint and draw the local environment around me, the trees, the people, the landscape and its inhabitants. I seek to represent particular details of this landscape that resonate with me from a view within. My work embodies an interplay between nature and the spirit and our connected to time.
Art to me is a personal reflection of ones thoughts, visions & emotions combined with experimentations of mediums and techniques that are translated into visual languages. An allegory of the natural world transformed into a dream-like interpretation.
Whatever the medium, I am compelled to fuse multiple images into one composition to softly alternate the main subject and reveal its narrative. Sometimes I start with a linear sketch and allow the pencil or paint to reveal the next direction and form. Other times I arrange my ideas using Photoshop and collage and merge sections of previous drawings and photos to create new interpretations and expressions to use as a starting point to paint.
The oil painting series are vivid in colour, lively and responsive. Often created in large scale, with thick expressive paint and complicated overlay of fused imagery. The subject matter of portraits often develops from people who are close to me. I seek to represent their personalities by morphing their image into surrealist landscapes and dramatizing colour.
My silkscreen prints are complex and fused with metaphor on the notion of time. They begin as detailed pencil illustrations that transform in the darkroom with the photo emulsion technique. The hand-mixed metallic inks create an iridescent reflection that I hope will grab the attention of any viewer to take a second look.
Tree Lady illustration Collection portrays the sister spirit of nature, my love for trees fused with feminine strength, beauty, reflection and contemplation. It can be seen as the inner journey of the self as a woman, the metamorphic transformation – with twisted roots seeking an attainment of wisdom through the depths of experience and a balance of heritage. The intention is to ground the viewer in a calm yet captivating awe with the intricate detail, provoking the senses and seeing beyond the beauty. This collection is my most private journey and sometime the process of creating these illustrations is intuitive and the meaning can be revealed at a much later date. These illustrations are mostly large scale allowing my full arm to move and map out the formation of morphing the female figure to a large root system that can be similar to a long flowing gown. The technique is first linear than tonal. Gradually building up form and emphasis.
Having worked in the art industry for many years as a professional artist and teacher, I would love to share some of my experiences I have been fortunate enough to collect.
To live a life as an artist is a curious challenge. No one makes you do it, however you just can’t stop.
